Law of Uniform Connectedness
A continuous visual connection makes separate parts feel like one unit.
A line does more than decorate. It declares a relationship.
Four steps sit in a row. Add one line through their markers and they become a process with a direction. Remove the line and the same markers can look like four unrelated statuses.
Origin
Palmer and Rock described uniform connectedness in 1994. Connected regions with consistent visual properties tend to be perceived as units, even when proximity or similarity suggests another grouping.
Use connectors to show sequence, hierarchy, or flow. The line should explain a relationship that matters to the task.
Make direction explicit when order matters. An arrow, start point, or current state can turn a connection into a readable path.
Keep crossings and branches legible. When connectors overlap without clear junctions, the diagram creates more ambiguity than it removes.
Remove decorative lines that touch unrelated content. Accidental connections can imply sequence, ownership, or dependency where none exists.

A line joins the step markers from start to finish. Completed, current, and future states sit on one path, so the sequence reads as a single process.
Physical signals

Stations separated across the page belong to the same route because one colored line connects them. Intersections show where that relationship changes.
Steps, nodes, or related states appear near one another, but nothing shows their order, direction, or dependency.
Use a continuous connector or shared visual band to show the real path, then label changes in state or direction where the connection alone is not enough.
