Distance is part of the interface's grammar.
A form label sits halfway between two fields. Both fields are valid, but the spacing makes the relationship ambiguous. Move the label closer to its own field and the form becomes understandable before anyone reads the words.

Max Wertheimer described proximity in his 1923 work on perceptual organization. Elements separated by the smaller interval were commonly seen as part of the same group.
Keep labels, values, and controls closer to the item they describe than to the next item in the sequence.
Create a repeatable spacing hierarchy. The contrast between an inner gap and an outer gap matters more than one universal pixel value.
