A polished interface often feels easier to use before anyone has tested how well it works.
Polish shapes the first usability judgment, but it cannot rescue a broken task.
Put the same checkout flow in two visual systems. If one feels calmer, clearer, and more considered, people may expect it to work better. That first impression matters, even though the steps underneath have not changed.

In 1995, Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura had 252 people rate 26 ATM layouts. Ratings of apparent ease were strongly related to the layouts' aesthetic treatment.
Treat visual design as part of usability. Hierarchy, spacing, typography, and state clarity shape how approachable an interaction feels.
Do not use polish to hide friction. Test task completion separately from visual preference so a strong first impression does not mask a weak flow.
Keep the aesthetic aligned with the job. A restrained admin tool and an expressive music app can both feel considered without looking alike.
Fix the basics before adding delight. Clear labels, readable contrast, useful feedback, and predictable controls earn more trust than decorative effects.
